The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) was created in 1996 in order to consolidate resources and provide the City of New York with higher-quality, more efficient youth and family programming. There are two primary after school programs provided through the DYCD:
Out of School Time:
Out of School Time (OST) is the largest after-school program in the nation, designed to operate after school hours, during weekends, and school vacations. If parents are not around during this time, a child can enjoy academic support, sports, recreational activities, the arts and cultural experiences at no cost to the family. The program is available for all grade school age children and teens.
There are presently 320 programs in public schools, 13 in public parks, 32 in NYCHA sites and 193 in other community-based organization. It runs from the end of the school day until 6 PM.

The Beacon Program:
The Beacon Program was made as an extension to education after school hours. There are currently 80 centers throughout the city. Located in public school buildings, Beacon centers offers youth programs in five primary areas:
Examples of activities and programs found at Beacon include tutoring, preparation for higher education, art and photography, physical activities such as basketball and martial arts, and mental activities such as chess.
In addition, Beacon centers are open to adults trying to get their GED, improve their English language skills, get help on parenting and family relations, and tenant education and advocacy.
