How do I apply for free tax preparation assistance?

Listed below are several links to tax preparation assistance sites where you can receive free help filing your tax returns and claiming tax credits:

FoodChange has free tax preparation sites throughout New York City, to help low-income working families and individuals with free, quality tax filing and help claiming the EITC and other important credits. You may schedule an appointment or visit FoodChange during office hours for free tax preparation assistance. FoodChange sites have extended hours and electronic filing. FoodChange staff can assist you in many different languages. Visit the FoodChange website to find a FoodChange site in your area.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites provide free and quality tax preparation assistance for people who cannot afford professional assistance. Trained volunteers help prepare basic tax returns for families and individuals with low incomes. VITA sites offer electronic filing. You must set up an appointment to receive free tax preparation assistance at a VITA site. A list of VITA sites is below.

In the case that you cannot visit either a FoodChange or VITA site, you can visit the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center for free tax preparation assistance. Please note that Taxpayer Assistance Centers only file federal tax returns for individuals who qualify for the Federal EITC or who have incomes of less than $36,000 a year. The IRS encourages people to call ahead for appointments, but they are not necessary. Click here to find an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in your area.
