Families
DHS defines a family as: 1) legally married couples with or without children; 2) single parents with children; 3) pregnant women; and 4) unmarried couples, with or without children, who have cohabited for a substantial period of time and demonstrate a need to be sheltered together.
To be eligible, your family must have no other safe place to stay. If you do have somewhere to stay, even temporarily, you will receive homelessness prevention programs instead. The DHS will conduct an investigation to make sure your family is in need of immediate government shelter.
Families have a different set of shelters available to them, depending on their situation.
Families with children under 21 and/or pregnant women should go to:
All other families should go to:
Please bring any documents that will help the shelter staff understand why you are homeless. This includes eviction notices, letters from landlords and documents from doctors showing why you can't live at your previous location anymore. A complete list of documents can be found at: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dhs/html/homeless/famserv.shtml
If placed in a shelter, you will be expected to work closely with your DHS case worker and be as active as possible in finding new jobs and permanent housing. You must apply for public assistance and take the first apartment that's offered to you.
