The Fresh Air Fund

Do you want your child to have a free summer vacation outside of New York City?

Quick Facts
What is it?
The Fresh Air Fund provides NYC children free summer vacations through their Friendly Town and sleep away camp programs. In Friendly Town about 5,000 children visit volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 across the Northeast and Canada. The Fresh Air camps host 3,000 children in 5 different camps on a 2,300-acre site in Fishkill, New York.

What do you get?
Through Friendly Town, children ages 6– 18 are matched with families that either live in small towns or farms. Host families plan activities that can include anything from swimming, visiting museums to going to a baseball game. Children 8—15 can attend a Fresh Air Fund Camp. Campers visit animals at the Model Farm and even learn how to milk a cow. The five camps share a planetarium where children learn about the stars shining in the clear country sky. Children participate in many recreational activities including swimming, fishing, hiking, boating, games, and arts and crafts. In addition, campers learn responsibility by sharing chores such as bed making, cabin and bathroom cleaning, and waiting tables at mealtimes. Each camp also has a wide range of indoor activities including art, music and dance, along with literacy and computer skills development.

How long do you get it?
Friendly Town visits range from 10 to 12 days; while the Fresh Air Fund camp has four two week sessions. Vacations begin June 29th and last until August 20th. Over 65% of all children are reinvited to stay with host families, year after year.
