Prepare for Challenges to Completing your Training & Education Goals.
Prepare for Challenges to Completing your Training & Education Goals
'Easy to start, hard to finish' can describe many training
and education programs. If you are a student who is trying to go to school
while you work and/or take care of your family, it can be especially difficult
to complete your program.
The resources below were designed to help you prepare for the
challenges of balancing work, school, and family. By preparing for
these challenges ahead of time you can increase your chances for successful
completion of your T&E program.
Child Care
Trying to go to school and work can be
especially tough if you have young children. It's
hard to find someone you trust to care for your children while you're away from
home, and good childcare can be expensive. Our
Smart Choices for Childcare guide
can help you find quality childcare that you can afford and help you think
about back-up options so you are not faced with having to miss class or work to
take care of your family.
Financial Stress
Let's face it, even if you were not going to school, finances
can be very stressful. Check out the following tools
to help you manage your finances and avoid financial stress that can lead to
you dropping out of a T&E program.
- Find out if you qualify
for benefits elsewhere on this website such as
Food Stamps and the
Earned Income Tax Credit which can help put more
money in your pocket.
-
Seek free or low cost
financial counseling and develop a personal financial management plan. Just
having a plan can reduce stress and help you to stay focused on school and not
financial stress. Check out this list of programs from the New York
State Banking Department that provide free financial counseling and education services
in New York City.
Academic Needs/Tutoring
If you are having trouble understanding a topic or
class in your program, or if you are having trouble passing exams
or getting good grades, take action!
Many programs offer free tutoring to help students stay
on top of their school demands. You have nothing to lose by asking, and the
sooner you ask the more likely you will avoid doing poorly or even having to
drop out of your program.
