Am I eligible for HEAP?

You are eligible for HEAP if you:
  • Are a US citizen or qualified alien (see "Look Out" below)
  • Receive Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance or SSI, OR
  • Have a qualifying income (see table below)
For example, let's say your family size is 4 and your household income is less than or equal to $4,127 per month. You would qualify for HEAP if you had an electric bill in your name.

HEAP Income Limits
family size monthly income
1 $2,146
2 $2,806
3 $3,466
4 $4,127
5 $4,787
6 $5,447
7 $5,571
8 $5,695
9 $5,818
10 $5,942
11 $6,136
Each additional add: $478

*Note: income limits will rise every year. Check here for the most up to date income limits for HEAP.

The amount you receive in HEAP depends on the type of fuel you use. The amount you receive increases if your household contains vulnerable individuals (i.e. household member who is age 60 or older, under age 6 or permanently disabled)

Look Out
Non-US citizens may still apply for HEAP as long as they are considered a 'qualified alien.' To find out who is included, check out the OTDA's Guide for Qualified Aliens.
