What is it? Administered by the New York City Department for the Aging, SCRIE provides protection from rent increases for low- to moderate-income seniors living in rent-regulated apartments. What do you get? If you meet eligibility criteria, your monthly rent will be adjusted to the level prior to the increase. For example, if your rent increases from $600 to $700 per month, SCRIE will cover the $100 difference and you will continue paying $600 per month. How long do you get it? To remain eligible, you must renew your benefits every two years. If you have signed a one-year lease, the benefits must be renewed each year when the lease expires. |
