What is it?
SSI helps people who are over the age of 65, blind, or who have a disability pay their bills by providing monthly cash assistance. People who get SSI automatically get health insurance as well. What do you get? You can receive up to $637 each month if you qualify as an individual or up to $956 each month if you and your spouse qualify together. This money comes from the federal government. In some states, the local government will give you money in addition to that provided by the federal government. How long do you get it? You can receive SSI for as long as you remain eligible. If you have a medical condition that is expected to improve you will have a review anywhere between 6 months and 3 years after receiving your first payment. Otherwise reviews may be conducted every 5 to 7 years. |
